Rebar and Reinforcement Supply in Wigan

Wigan’s construction activity currently centres on two very different kinds of project. In the town centre, the former Galleries shopping complex — once around a quarter of the town centre’s footprint — has been demolished and is being rebuilt as a mixed-use residential, leisure, and retail destination. A few miles out at Junction 25 of the M6, Symmetry Park Wigan is under construction on a former colliery site, delivering well over a million square feet of logistics space directly onto the motorway network. Reinforcement requirements across the borough reflect that split — phased, dense town centre construction on one side, and large-scale industrial ground-bearing slab work on the other, with a heritage mill conversion adding a third, distinct strand in between.

We supply reinforcing bar, cut and bent reinforcement, and mesh to construction projects across Wigan, working from your reinforcement schedule or bar bending schedule rather than a generic product list — send what documentation you have and we’ll confirm the specification before anything’s ordered. For the underlying product detail — standards, fabrication process, mesh designation — see our pages on Reinforcing Bar Manchester, Cut and Bent Rebar Manchester, and Reinforcement Mesh Manchester. This page covers what’s specific to Wigan.

The Galleries: A Full Town Centre Rebuild

The Galleries: A Full Town Centre Rebuild

The Galleries was an eight-acre shopping complex — combining the former Galleries Shopping Centre, Marketgate Shopping Centre, and Makinson Arcade — that closed in 2022 and was fully demolished by early 2024. In its place, a joint venture between Wigan Council and developer Cityheart, with BCEGI appointed as main contractor, is delivering a roughly £135 million mixed-use scheme. Planning permission was granted in November 2021, and the redevelopment includes 464 new homes, a 144-bedroom hotel (with Hilton signed as franchise operator), a new market hall, and an 84,000 sq ft multimedia and leisure centre with a six-screen cinema, bowling, and mini golf.

Because the site was demolished in full rather than partially redeveloped, construction is proceeding in defined phases — the market hall and hotel infrastructure first, followed by the multimedia centre and pavilion — over roughly an 18-month main construction programme from groundbreaking, based on the timeline reported when works began. Reinforcement for a phased rebuild like this needs the same kind of sequenced delivery planning seen on other major town-centre regeneration sites: confirming which phase a job actually belongs to, and scheduling against that phase’s specific programme rather than the scheme as a whole.

Cotton Works: A Heritage Mill Conversion

Away from The Galleries, Wigan-based developer Heaton Group has been bringing forward a roughly £180 million regeneration of the 17-acre former Eckersley Mill site, rebranded as Cotton Works — an office, leisure, and residential complex. The scheme has involved working with Historic England given the site’s heritage status, with the conversion of “Mill One” including a food hall and tap room among its early uses. As with comparable mill-conversion projects elsewhere in Greater Manchester, reinforcement here often has to work around existing structures and historic ground conditions rather than a clean new-build specification, so confirming the actual structural drawings for the specific building or plot matters more than it would on a greenfield site.

Symmetry Park Wigan: Logistics on a Former Colliery Site

Symmetry Park Wigan sits on a 134-acre site at Junction 25 of the M6, developed by Tritax Symmetry on land that was an active opencast coal mine and colliery until the early 1980s. The scheme has full planning consent for around 1.44 million sq ft of logistics space, representing a stated construction investment of roughly £73 million, with a first phase of around 300,000 sq ft across two units and outline consent for a further 1.14 million sq ft beyond that. The scheme’s planning history is itself notable — it was called in by the Secretary of State alongside several other North West logistics sites before being approved — and a green buffer was built into the plans between the development and the nearest housing at Winstanley.

Reinforcement for units at Symmetry Park is large-scale, heavily engineered ground-bearing slab work, generally with straightforward access given the site’s direct M6 and A49 frontage — a different kind of order, in both scale and access planning, from anything at The Galleries or Cotton Works.

What Reinforcement Wigan Projects Typically Need

  • Town centre phased-rebuild reinforcement — for The Galleries and comparable staged redevelopment, with delivery planned against each construction phase rather than the scheme as a whole
  • Heritage mill-conversion reinforcement — for Cotton Works and similar sites, needing close attention to existing structures and ground conditions
  • Large-scale logistics reinforcement — for Symmetry Park Wigan units, heavily engineered ground-bearing slab work at a scale well beyond standard commercial jobs
  • Standard residential and commercial reinforcement — across Wigan’s wider borough outside the three named schemes

Reinforcement is supplied to BS 4449, cut and bent to BS 8666:2020 shape codes, and mesh to BS 4483:2025. The applicable standard and grade depend on the specific product and project specification, which should come from the structural drawings and reinforcement schedule — a supplier does not replace the structural engineer’s design; we fabricate and supply against what’s specified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is reinforcement for The Galleries different from a standard town centre job? In sequencing, yes — because the site was demolished and is being rebuilt in defined phases, delivery is typically planned against the specific phase a job belongs to rather than the scheme as a whole.

Do you supply reinforcement for units at Symmetry Park Wigan? Yes — large-scale logistics and industrial reinforcement is a core part of what we supply, and Symmetry Park’s direct M6 and A49 access generally makes delivery straightforward compared with a dense town centre site.

Does a mill-conversion site like Cotton Works need different reinforcement planning? Often, yes — existing structures and heritage considerations can affect the requirement and access, so we’d work from the actual structural drawings for that specific building rather than a generic new-build assumption.

What standards does Wigan reinforcement need to meet? It depends on the specific product and project — relevant standards can include BS 4449 for reinforcing steel, BS 8666:2020 for scheduling and bending, and BS 4483:2025 for mesh. The applicable standard should be confirmed against your project’s own specification.

Do I need a structural engineer to specify reinforcement for a Wigan project? Yes — reinforcement should be specified by the structural engineer or designer responsible for the project. We supply and fabricate against that specification; we don’t determine it.
